Lady Grey

Tripping my way along William street

coat swung about in the canyon breeze

50 cents in every corner

time coursing out my pocket

all the lights have been left on

my electric city

burns towards the dawn

I can still remember things that might have been

In some other world

in some other way

everything is here again in overlay

high heeled marks where the girls once stood

on the avenue

soft boned tramlines hidden under skin

Take them all in your own way

Like you did for it always

Fa la la la la la la la la la la la la la la

I’ve been thrown out of better milk bars than this

Heart and feet pounding down the alley in the days

when we were kings

Like all the purest things here grown in sin

I’m another of her black haired scruffy ruffians

Take them all in your own way

Like you did for it always

Fa la la la la la la la la la la la la la la

Time will make of flaw a virtue

You will sparkle in the day

and to those who’ve truly loved you

Know you wear it best in grey
