Schooled by the Jungle Kings!

A glorious weekend off...hmm..what do we do...hmm..I know, lets go play at Other Peoples Gigs! Lol!

Paul reckons we are Musical Tramps (he used a different word but I am trying to keep this a family show kids) as he was off playing with Mr Jim Finn and Finn at the Crowne Hotel and Theo kindly invited me to go join him at the Five Dock Club with his "other' band...hang on, I think we are his 'other' band...hmm...anyway, I was very graciously invited to join the Jungle Kings (Ahhhooooooaaaaaa Tarzan noise now) for a few sets at their gig tonight and was Schooled.

Yep, Charlie Cole, Mick Malouf, Michael Hawke and our very own Theo were swinging from the trees in Five Dock.

Rosie has been out to see them perform before and had many good reports, but this is the first time I have seen them and I must say I was impressed.  here's a moment of Michael and Charlie during 'Golden Wedding' -- great clarinet!

Charlie was playing keyboards and trumpet simultaneously, Michael was playing Saxophone, Guitar, Mandolin, Clarinet, Flute and singing (although not simultaneosuly, now THAT would have been impressive). They were tight and riding a great vibe.

This posed something of a challenge for Little Old Me, with my one little tiny instrument (no sniggering from you dear reader), but I endeavoured to do my best. Thats the first time I have ever tried playing 'I Feel Good' (a La James Browne) on Harmonica and was surprised to find that A: its possible and B: I knew where the notes were. Scary stuff! They were very kind and let me pretend to be part of the Horn Section (at last!).

The Jungle Kings play around the traps a lot, check'em out at junglekings.com and on nights when we're not playing, you'll find Theo in the Drummers seat keeping it all together. Yep, watching Michael Hawke pump out the energy during 'Shout' and 'What I say' showed me what front men are supposed to be doing.

I think I just got schooled again!

Great article about the difficulties of returning to civillian life

Howdy Folks.

Well, after finishing Swamp Monster I was turning my attention to the next clips we want to make, and one of them is for Running Jody (from Carl's Chair). Running Jody is, I guess, the second half of Roscoe's Boogie (see the videoclip to your left) and is all about the difficulties associated with returning to civillian life after serving in the military.

As I was doing my reading today I came across a great article by Matt Farwell and it struck a chord with me

 http://atwar.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/05/back-home-and-homeless/?src=tp

It seems like the same stuff affects just about everyone who has done what they do. The stuff about Matt having to hide his bags or wind up like Rambo echoes the line in our song 'grab my only bag, it holds everything I have'

Our mate Roscoe has been back to Iraq recently and I still write longer emails than I receive :-)  Thankfully, he's out of harms way for the time being.

To organise the videoclip for Running Jody,  I was lucky enough to meet up with a chap we'll call 'Rhino' , who volunteered to play the main part.

In a typically synchronistic moment, Rhino is an Australian version of Roscoe and after talking to him about his life and the difficulty he has had in transitioning to "normal" life, I felt as if we could have just as easily written the song about his experiences.

One of the great things about making our own videoclips is that it allows us to add another layer of information about the song, and most of our songs are stories of one kind or another. Some are mythical, but many are stories from the people we know.

We're fortunate to be able, in part, to help tell their stories.

I'll keep you posted on how the next videoclip production goes, in the interim, have a read of Matt's article, its an eye opener, and if you're up for it, check out the donations section for the foundation supporting his brothers family. www.garyfarwell.com

Big Ups to We Saw That for letting us use some footage!

Ask and ye shall receive..or something like that.

Well, hot on the heels of Doing The Right Thing and requesting permisssion to use some footage, I got a very nice email back from We Saw That saying 'ok'. 1 down, 1 to go...ooh...now I only have 4 seconds risk, which is great, considering Rosie's verdict on the new clip is 'best Ever'. I told him to wait for the Island Time clip. He didnt offer to hit me, so I am doing well!

Thus, our gratitude and respect goes out to We Saw That for Internet Nobility! Check out their Blog and show the love

Swamp Monster videoclip completed but I cant show you (yet)

Boy that took me a while. I am reminded of Valve softwares press release 'Newflash: Making Games is hard!', but in this case, it's Videoclips.

Yep, after several months, multiple scripts (write'em, cost'em, figure out we can't afford'em, forget'em, write another one) I have finished the Swamp Monster videoclip! Hurrah!

But I cant show it to you.

Well...yet. I am using a bunch of public domain footage but opted to use 2 X 4 second shots licensed under Creative Commons, but I am waiting on the Official Permission of them what made the footage. Its not that tough to replace the bits but I am hopeful that the folks who posted their stuff online will see clear to letting us use it. Fingers (claws?) crossed.

Failing which, I will need to find 8 seconds of footage...so if Spongebob turns up unexpectedly in the clip you'll know why. Oh...that's copyright too? ARGH! Foiled again!

Stay tuned, it should be online this week, one way or another!
