Artwork concepts for SC6

Details
Created: 18 November 2011

One of the things we have to do as we get closer to releasing an album is to develop the final artwork. For those of you who have followed the blogs during the release of our previous 4 cd's, you know that we try out lots of different ideas. If you review the album blogs you'll see me posting various versions as we work through them.

Right now we're working on two projects, SC5 and SC6 (working titles, dont worry) and as per usual, its a matter of seeking inspiration both from the musical content and from  the world around us. One of our influences is modern Graphic Novel artwork.

As you may have guessed, from the fact that we maintain our very own underground comic section  (courtesy of our talented mates Terry Lyndon and Bob Carter) I am a fan of underground comic art, having spent many moons buying old, weird and obscure comics at Ashwoods (back in the day). I still occasionally like to poke arond the latest comic...oops..I mean 'Graphic Novel' (lol). Here's a great example from a few years back

I love the use of light and dark in the recent stuff.

Anyway, with the various things going on around the world atm,  it gave rise to a few attempts at an idea for the SC6  Cover.

Now I know I am posting artwork for the album after the one we're working on now, but dont worry if I do it out of order, the ideas strike when they strike.

So in thinking about the various '1%' groups around the world at the moment, and being a keen Sons Of Anacrhy Fan, I kind of liked the concept of a Wall St Outlaw Motorcycle Club. But what would you call them? Well thats obvious, the Masters Of The Universe MC (Mercantile Collective).

Here's some concept art :

And of course, the front Patches:

These may or may not make it to the SC6 Cover, they're purely conceptual, but worth sharing. With any luck, I'll post the concept art for the coming album (SC5) next week.

The calm before the storm...cellar high volume string of gigs!

Details
Created: 18 November 2011

Howdy Folks. Well, we have had a relaxing couple of non gigging weekends, but as the end of the year approaches, things start to ramp up again, starting the weekend of the 25th November with three gigs back to back - Friday in Kurnell, Saturday at the Bald Rock and Sunday as the houseband for the Sydney Blues Society at the Botany View hotel.

Thereafter, I think we have something on every weekend until the end of the year, and if you peruse the gig guide, you'll observe that we're starting to to get bookings into 2012, with our first appearance at the Exchange Hotel in Newcastle on the 15th of January.

Somewhere in between all of this stuff we still have to finish the songs for the next recording, complete the preproduction process, make a few decisions on exactly how the heck to record the next stuff, do some photos and so on and so forth, so despite 2011 winding down, its looks like we're just getting started on a busy period.

Oh I forgot to mention, we took a break from writing songs for the next album, to start work on songs for the experimental side project thats due after the album - I mean why not, thats how we came up with Spacejunk. Yes, with SC5 (the fifth CD, yes it does have a title, no I'm not telling you what it is yet) we're also working on SC6 (yes it also has a working title, but it contains rude words so I cant post it here, as I know some of you read this at work).

SC5 is due to be a full 12 track album, SC6 is due to be another experiment (look how much trouble we got into over Carl's Chair!) but, like Carl's Chair, we have no idea how many songs will wind up on it.

We still hoping to start recording SC5 shortly, and that means road testing the songs, which means bringing them into the set and seeing how they fly. Only one of the songs for SC6 is in the set so far, but  expect to see a raft of new stuff start intruding on the set over the next month.

We've had a request from our management team (Roger?) to get some new photos done, which is more difficult than you may imagine, as none of us particularly like doing photos. Tonight , for the second only time, we had a 'stylist' meeting (ye gods). Big thanks to the wonderful Jodee.

She inspected our hair (apparently we all have excellent hair, with Theo's being the best), two of us look good in hats (wont mention who), one of us should wear Beads and , according to Jodee I have a 'Deadwood' / 'Al Swearengen' thing going on. I am not so sure about this. Here is Ian McShane as Al Swearengen

And here's me, attempting my best Al Swearengen look...or not.

I think he can do the glare more convincingly and besides which, he has a much more constrained Mo' :-)

The next step is 'accessorising' (OMG), picking the location for the next photos, waiting for the photographer to get back from New York (boy are we Hipsters all of a sudden) and then away we go. I think there was some discussion about leopard skin couches, white moccasins and possibly a sombrero. Oh boy. It'll be a few weeks before we do the photoshoot, stay tuned for the result...

3 new chord charts from Mr Wizard, including a Mandolin Chord Chart!

Details
Created: 15 November 2011

Hey Sliders. Little did I know that my Chord Chart stuff would prove so popular, I guess its because people charge for these on 'other' sites.

Here's a few newies for ya.

This is an A-Open Tuning set of chords, some standard, a few obscure you might find interesting.

a-open-tuning-chords

Here's a G Open Tuning set of chords. These are actually the same chords as in our song 'that smiles not for me', although this is a different key ('that smile's not for me is in A')

These are some mandolin chords from a new song we're working on called 'Country Radio' - but it might be called something else, or not even make it to the album, who knows, but here's the mandolin chords anyway

Hope these give you some hours of fun!
