HG&BG Session 4 - Tuesday is my turn in the barrel

Details

Ah yes, and oldy but a goody.

The view from the 'other' side of the window as I took my turn in the recording area today.

Howdy folks! We got another session in the studio today, ostensibly for vocals but, well, I wasn't quite up for it. Achoo. Sniff.

I had to go borrow the Uber Microphone from R. and arrived at the studio to find the boys at work on Texas Rosie.

After the boys finished guitar work, we took a moment to review the vocals takes from the location recordings and decided we'd revisit half a dozen or so and see if we could get a better take, but despite cold and flu remedy and a cup of tea, Pete wasn't happy with my pipes, so we opted to start work on the harmonica stuff.

There was discussion about choice of sounds (clean, dirty, use the bullet mike, use the vocal mike, etc.) so we tried a few different approaches.

One thing about the combination of Shure Green bullet and a valve amp - almost anything you do with one of those rigs sounds good, it almost feels like cheating. I fiddled around with some Little Walter licks that come to life with the right amp/mike combo and was eventually persuaded by the guys to use it for a few songs.

I've been so used to  a straight clean sound through a vocal mike that it takes a bit of getting used to.

With the luxury of time in the studio , we messed around with some new ideas. I hadn't planned on adding harp to every track, but Mr Wizard was keen on trying it out on a few songs that I thought were fine as they were, including adding a harp solo to Black Crow, which I think unnecessary as A: Rosie has yet to put his solo down, B: I've never done a solo in that song and C: I thought the harp should only play a chordal 'organ' like pattern (when I grow up I want to be a Hammond).

Nonetheless, down it went. When we finished, Pete asked me what I thought. I opined that I was looking forward to hearing the Guitar solo ;-)  (Rosie, help me out here dude, they're making me play extra stuff)

When we tried the same thing with Hard Times, the song took on a new dimension. Same old blues and Suit Yourself got the Green Bullet treatment and the rougher sound fits in nicely with the songs.

Lastly, we decided to try and add some experimental harmonica sounds to Light In The Distance, with some interesting results. I don't think we nailed it yet, but there were some ideas that might bear fruit.

Taking a cue from Guitarist Land, I tried adding masses of delay a-la Led Zeppelin's version of 'When The Levee Breaks' , but the chord structure of the passage from the verse to the chorus is a strange progression and took me way out of Cross Harp style. I spent some time and various harps trying to find a position that suited it. On my next session, we'll try some Chromatic Harmonica, whack a bunch more pedals in the chain and see how far we can push the idea before we fall about laughing.

We're off to the Yackandandah Folk Festival this weekend but will be back in studio next week for another session or two.

Yay! We're going back to Yack!

No, not that yak, Yackandandah, the Yackandandah Folk festival!

As per Front Man Rule (the expanded list), I am not allowed to mention that we once had a picnic in Yackandandah. Apparently that contradicts our hard core image.

Bahahahaha.

Who am I kidding.

Last time we were in The Yack, Rosie scored some vintage vinyl Kraftwerk from the local antique curio place.

Yackandandah is at the foot of the snowy mountains, near the NSW/Victorian border. Here is normally where I would make some New South Welshman joke about needing a visa, but apparently that's against the continuously-updating set of Rules by which I am meant to abide. What, did I get a restraining order or something? Well, there was this one night in Albury...

But I digress.

We've played Myrtleford, Beechworth, Mt Beauty and Albury, so we've had a few gigs down that way and its a pleasure to be going back to Yack!

We're playing on Friday night 2rd March, late, 11pm at the Yackandandah Hotel, then two gigs on Saturday 24th March at 5pm at the Star Hotel and 7pm at the Holcim Marquee.

Work continued on the album this week with another day of Mr Wizard doing guitar stuff.

Once again, for the truly keen, here's a moment of what it takes to get the correct guitar licks.

Post Production is moving slowy at present, due to time and studio access constraints (there's a construction site going on next door). We won't get another session until next week, before we head off to the Yackandandah Folk festival next weekend.

Kate & Ash from Leather & Lace are opening up their Gallery on the 17th of March and invited us along to see our new band photo hung on a gallery wall and I promised I'd give it a plug on the website, so here ya go.

The gals do great work, here's their flier.

Oh, and I suppose I really ought to provide a link to the photo they took of us :-)

HG&BG Studio Session 2 - all the excitement of overdub!

Details
Created: 07 March 2012

Hi there folks.

We missed yesterdays session as I think I may have infected Pete with my headcold (all about gone now) but he was full of lemsip and chicken soup today and back at the controls.

If you've ever thought making a record was glamorous, let me help disprove that with some footage from Paul's guitar sessions - it's fussy, its intricate, it involves discussions such as  'the drum goes bum da biddy dum dum' and responses like 'oh, I thought it went bom didda didda dum daa'.

Paul has been powering through his overdubs and fixes and I spent a few minutes in the studio with Pete and Mr Wizard, ably abetted by his Wizardly Familiar, Bill-V, who came up to lend support...and guitars!

Today was Slide guitar and Electric guitar time.

Please note, if you're keen on in depth discussion about guitar tone, you'll probably get a kick out of these videos, if not...err...well...you were warned.

As they started work on Same Old Blues, I had a thought about the vocals.

Whilst we were recording, I was using the RF In Ear Monitors to listen to the band and occasionally they would drop out at crucial moments, I noticed on review of this song that I always seemed to be starting just a tad behind the beat...hmmm.

Comfortingly, Pete suggested the Electronics were fine and sugegsted the problem lay elsewhere. Cheers Pete ;-)

Paul started on the solo for Same Old Blues

After this it was time to to do She Keep You Moving On, which was going to use more or less the same amp/guitar setup - but noooo...

A discussion about TONE commenced.... This is the bit where you realise that recording an album is work as well as creative. Watch on if you're keen :-)

I left the guys midway through their session, but by now, Mr Wziard should be pretty much done with his stuff and we're done for this weeks work on the album. Next week, we'll be doing...err...where is that schedule?

Howdy Folks.

We did our first studio session for the album today, as Mr Wizard went in to record Mandolin, Acoustic Guitar overdubs and other exciting bits and pieces.

I was on stand by for Moral Support, but with a nice head-cold, wont be doing any singing for a few days. Our now Official Guitar Tech, Bill V, also came to join us, bringing yet more stuff from his vintage guitar collection.

With Pete at the controls, we locked Mr Wizard in the studio and sat back whilst he did his stuff.

Paul started with Mandolin stuff for 2 songs, using this super nifty 1940's mandolin, borrowed from Rick O. yet more borrowed glory :-)

After the mando and some acoustic embellishments to a few songs,  Paul started work on the acoustic guitar parts for Light in the Distance.

This song has caused some degree of controversy as incorrectly handled, there are fears it could turn into a....gasp...Rock Anthem. Uh oh..

How this develops and what treatment we finally give it is still up for grabs.

Here are a few moments from today's progress.

After the acoustic parts, it was time for Dobro licks!

I left them to as it as they began doing electric stuff, but we'll all be  back in the studio tomorrow, stay tuned for updates!
