Despatches from the Bald Rock - weekend gig report

Firstly, we send a big shout out to The Bondi Cigars; for my money, Sydney's premier Blues act.

They're doing a series of 20th Anniversary shows and one of them was at The Bridge in Rozelle on  on Saturday night, whilst we were playing Down The Road at The Bald Rock.

I was expecting it to pretty much drain the entire audience of Sydney, after all, it's the original line up.

Trivia for ya - Al Britton from the 'Cigars played Bass on 'That Smile's not for me' on our album  Nuevo Retro, so we have 1 degree of separation. AWESOME! Borrowed Glory indeed.

Right, so where was I? Oh yeah. Mr Wizard had suggested that I not mention the 'Cigars gig in case everyone left ours to go there, but he needn't have worried. There;'s enough love in Sydney to go around

How did the night start?

Typical Stormcellar weather

)

The Bald Rock has had a decor update, a change of hands and a change of the guard. We are glad to have made the cut...

There's even Art on the walls.

Sort of.

So the night started with the usual weather pattern, but how did it end?

Well...

Savane was having a birthday and was...'tired and emotional', as the euphemism goes..

Mr Wizard asked him to not slobber on the car.

How good a night?

Now this picture below is slightly misleading. he's on the floor because he was wrestling (for fun) with two friends. I kind of mistook it for some argy bargy and went to step in before this very lovable chap got into trouble, but it turned out that they were playing Mock Kidnap (I kid you not) including putting a bag on his head and holding him at Ray Gun point.

Now that's having a night out :-)

I'm having some technical problems with my in ear monitors at the moment (loose connectors) and I couldn't get comfortable for the first set.

By the second set I'd replaced them with my backup pair, complete with Lawnmower Earmuffs, which worked wonderfully well. The boys are horrified that I appear to be onstage with Fire Arm level hearing protection but if it works for me, I am not going to worry so much about the aesthetics.

By set two, things clicked and we lifted our game to our preferred level, much to our satisfaction. It's ok to have to work at it, it's worth it.

Big cheers to Elsa on sound, first time we've had to deploy our own kit in...err....yikes...a while. Thanks to GC for providing it (love ya bro).

Big crowd on Saturday night, typical Australians, needed a few beers and a little prompting before they danced, but dance they did. Therefore we win.

Cheers to the regulars and irregulars from the night, Sue C, Jen, Jill and all the folk who spent the evening with us.

We're recording from mid week until Sunday night as we push to finish The Curious Assembly, stay tuned for updates.

Recording 'Looking Glass', session 1

Wow, that was actually a pretty tough night by our standards. Trying to crank out a song after a full days work turns out to be completely exhausting.

Mr Wizard suggested that this track is harder for us to record because it's straying outside our comfort zone. Great! That's one of the things The Curious Assembly project was meant to do.

So, how far outside our Comfort Zone?

You may know Mr Wizard as a Slide Player, a Mandolin Player and an occasional Bassist in a Roots based band (that'd be us BTW), so you might find it surprising to learn that he's a big fan of Japanese and Korean Pop.

He thinks the chords and the musical arrangements are masterful, he likes the complexity, the constant onslaught of musical ideas.  (It just makes me dizzy)

He's a huge fan of Scandal

and he's even going to see Kyary Pamyu Pamyu this weekend. YIKES!!!

Here's the sort of thing i mean.  WARNING OMG sugar coated J-pop, you were warned!!!!

A while ago Mr Wizard decided to see if he could write a fusion Blues / J-Pop song, which is how we wound up with 'Looking Glass'.

In my usual conservative manner, I thought it was a bit risky so I said 'Hooray! It's weird! Let's do it!'

It's got your typical Blues Riff and a Super Sweet Sticky Bun chorus. ZOUNDS!

Mr Wizard explains that 'looking glass'  doesn't entirely make it as a J-pop song, as it's not complex enough or fast enough, but for us little old chickens, it's a monstrously terrifying battle between a Slide/Harp Riff and Diabetic Coma.

So I went looking for a studio to record it in. I assessed producers, engineers, equipment, environment, sticking to  the rules of The Curious Assembly, where each song has been recorded in it's own environment, carefully selected to maximise the synergy between the...

Ok. I chose it cos it had a pirate Ship as a logo...and I have been playing Assassins Creed Black Flag.

So there.

I'm sure decisions have been made using less rational criteria.

Not many, but some.

Thus did we find ourselves under the guidance of Captain Ben as we navigated Stormy seas at Everland Studios.

Poor Theo had been up since the wee small hours and had to put in a monster effort on one of the harder drum tracks to get right.

.

We put Mr Wizard in a cupboard. Ok maybe just his amp.

Everland studios is the cleanest, neatest, tidiest studio of the project so far. A prize will be awarded shortly.

Buttons! I will make more of this in the video to follow..

Do you suffer from Wilted Candle syndrome?

Spotted this in the studio. I bet every Muso that sees this goes 'oooh...cool african drumming'

It's in French and English!

Saw this on the wall. Face it, Harmonica players have always been hip. check out those waiter style tuxedos. Play some harp and bring me my damn nachos pronto!

And yes, continuing my current trend of mashing all the vids from a session into 1, here's the vid!

This song is not finished by along shot (ARGH!)

Cheers to Ben for trooping on despite a cold. We're about 2/3 of the way through this one.

Yoicks and Away! The Curious Assembly recordings move flawlessly forward.

In the latest installment of Me Vs Entropy, we stirke a blow thus! Ha!

Take that!

Ouch. It's fascinating. Hypnotic. Must not duck smash.

Where was I?

Ah yes. The recordings proceed apace, with another scheduled for tomorrow night.

That will bring us up to...err...um...hmm lets count...err...8 out of 13, plus the one tomorrow...that'll be 9 down and 4 to go.

We're also scheduled to finish Slipping Through These Blues in the coming week, which will entail amongst other things, crafting a monstrous Frankenstein guitar solo from 4 very good takes that Rosie put down.

I spent today analysing the solo and looking for highlights in each take.

I started with a grading system of A meaning 'A GRADE RIFF', B 'GOOD BUT NOT GREAT- MAY BE USED IN PASSING' and C: "Acceptable"

By the fourth take I realized I had set by threshold too low and had to change the ratings to A, AA, and AAA, and B.

For example, when I graded the elements in the solo in Take 4:

SOLO  4

AA:         00:45-00:54

AAA:      00:54-01:01

AA:         01:01-01:11

A:            01:11-01:22

A:            01:21-01:39

AA:         01:39-01:44

AAA:      01:44-01:55

A:            01:55-02:03

AA:         02:11-02:21

A:            02:21-03:03 – AA with edits

Holy crap. Imagine what would happen if we took all the AAA bits from the other solos and linked them together in one passage?

Yes, it might threaten the very notion of of mans place within the universe.

I realise I have just blown your mind.

You're welcome, but I must rush, so many things to do.
