Sonically, where to from here? Mixing SC10 and SC11

Many thanks to my teacher, Jim Conway, who has very kindly been providing feedback and ideas on the current batch of mixing and my harmonica parts.

I'd be nuts not to take advantage of Jims help and I have been fortunate to take some Master Class lessons over the past month.

My timing needs work, just ask Theo.

Getting a pat on the head for interesting phrasing makes me smile tho'. It's nice to keep learning with my sensei.

While reviewing Harp parts for 'Brave with your heart' and a solo for 'Soul Thing' I've had a chance to run through the 5D-SC10 & SC11 cross over material.

Jim's thoughts turned to Strings in Pirouette (acoustic) and Sail Away, which made sense.

Whereas I'd been thinking along similar lines, Jim knew who to call. We tried, it worked; what next?

We're exploring a local Sydney sound right now in the same way as we explored US sounds over the last three albums. Where better to start than back at the beginning, with local Muso's, local opinions and local musical sensibilities.

There's a term that's been circulating in our ranks for a while now - it's up to us where we explore, not what we find.

Mr Wizard came in this week with a counter proposal to allay my concerns about the high output level from the crew right now.

'Let's make a double album' he said.

Oh for the love of Mike.

thanks to all the folks who joined us at Frankies. Jo came out too. Thanks Lachlan.

Thanks Lee. Good pizza.

I thought I'd be on my own for a studio session today, as I pushed forward to try and get some more work done on 5D.

I was happy to see Mr Wizard and Brother Bill come on in and whittle away at it.

Cheers to Marcus & Ben.

Marcus did the work of a chamber orchestra. The digital age is pretty amazing.

I think that's the last of the instrumentation to add to 5D.

Monte dropped in and nodded off on the couch to the soothing sounds. The 5D pieces are very relaxing indeed.

I'm listening now.

One last track to record, then a little more mixing.

I've saved the first mix of Pirouette (electric version) to hear what Ben has come up with.

A good night, a good day.

Back to listening.

Back in the studio this week, yay! 5D and SC11 continue

On a positive note, we commence work on Friday arvo on mixing for 5D and some more work on SC11.

What is an album anyway?

With an unlimited infinite format...yeah I know I said that in a post a while back. Get on with it.

5D doesn't need any more instrumentation..or does it?

5D, which will be sequentially SC10, shows us the way to SC11.

For those confused, 'Defiance' our 9th album is 'SC9' in internal parlance.

Got that?

All right I'll try again.

While promoting album 9, we started work on a video project we called 'Dust, Dusk, Drums, Dawn, Darkness' or '5D' for short, which is our 10th project with 5 songs written and the actual guitar take used in the song filmed on location, the rest of the instrumentation added in studio.

While working on 'Pirouette' the guys turned it into an electric song with a totally different feeling, which led us into the idea of what the next album could be, which led to recording 4 songs, which leads into the 11th album.

Got that?

Sc9 to 5D (SC10) to SC11.

CD's are disappearing. Video is the new audio. Youtube the new radio. Streaming and voluntary access are the new mechanisms.

I can't think about all of that. We have mixing to do.

Marcus Holden very kindly made some space to come and test out some string ideas for 5D on Friday.

We have no idea if it will work. We're totally OK with testing ideas. This is the fun bit.

'Oh that'll be brilliant'...five minutes later...'uh...err...um.'

To illustrate, let me relay an anecdote from recording 'Downward Bound' with Jeff Cripps at A# studios.

Me: 'Tambo would be good here'

J: "yeah.'

J hands me tambourine, I go into the booth, cue up the track.

M: it goes here.

Roll tape.

I play badly out of time.

Jeff comes in looks at me and takes the tambourine away.

We have scheduled some spontaneity for Friday.

I'll post action on the fly to FB.

Oh yeah. Also gig tonight at Frankies.

It all seems to happen at once huh?

Farewell Mr Tom Petty, thank you. We hate to see you go.

(sigh)

What a time it's been.

We did our 10th interview with Australian Spectrum last night.

I have my 10th coffee mug.

Ross goes to a huge effort, and if we were as good as Ross's stated opinion of us is, we'd be a very good band indeed. Something to aspire to.

30 hours of broadcast of interviewers with us over 9 years of appearing on the show.

Thanks Ross.

Very very kindly, Ross has asked us in for a second show this year, to talk about the Defiance album.

On any other day I'd be all chipper about it.

Right now I'm kind of bummed out a bit and listening to Love is a long road.

Tom is (still, at the time of writing), a Road Pro and I figure he'd shake his head and remind us to get out there and do the thing.

Damn it.

So yeah. Suck it up. Get on with it. It's a long road.

get well soon Tom.

We're grateful to Ross for all the support he's shown the hardworking Aussie musicians over the years. He's been a champion of countless bands.

It's what this journey is made of.
