Great Moments In Lyrical Fail #23 - Moon June Spoon Loon Baboon

Howdy Folks.

Rosie brought in a new piece of music the other day and I set myself the task of writing something lyrically appropriate.

It's got this bouncy kind of reggae feel so i have been all over youtube liberally applying Marley to myself. In fact I have had complaints from them-whats-shares-my-environment about repeating this song over and over. Not his most well known or arguably best writing but I still dig it. apologies for the Advert at the start..

In the Lyrics Department, a brightly lit corner of the Stormcellar with a window out over the back garden, Lyric Gnomes do battle for ideas - Rhyming Vs Prose, Traditional VS Weird, On the beat Vs Off The Beat, Over the Melody VS Alt Melody and so on and so forth.

For those that are into word games, this is all good stuff. (Mind you, there are those amongst us that think Words are the Squawks in between Clever Guitar Chords.)

Nonetheless, we have a very open and failure loving system, because it's only by embracing complete FAIL that you can luck out onto a great combination.

For both our amusement, here's a great moment of fail from yesterday's writing.

As it was a reggae-ish tune and most reggae stuff seems to be short two verse stanzas with rhyming endings such as:

'get up, stand up, stand up for your rights

get up stand up, don't give up the fight'

I thought I'd give it a shot. Ok Rhyming it is.

What about subject matter? Marley gave us more than a Sound, his music put forth short, well thought out, well encapsulated positive ideas.

Well, we kinda took that approach for Hard times (remember? if not here's the vid)

hmmm...well I guess that's still an option, but what about a Love Song instead? The world might already have a plethora of'em but we don't, so, okie doke, let's give it a shot.

My first verse was going ok, nothing too ridiculous.

Then I hit verse 2.

It all started when I tried using the word Lagoon.

Firstly, it's a ghastly mental image with potentially subconscious references to Female....err....you know. (blush)

But more problematic is that it gives rise to the dread OON ending.

OON

Before I knew it, the next line was ending in in MOON. (oh no)

As I realised what I'd done, frankly, I gave up and just went with it.

Kingly tide and Crimson Moon

Power of a great baboon

Lyrics written by a loon.

Spoon in june and spoon.

I added a second 'Spoon' there just because I could. Because: Transcendent Awfulness.

Also very amusing.

More music from our mates - Dan Bongo

Howdy Folks.

Once again, when it's quiet on the blog, we've been off doing something else.

Our mate 'Dan Bongo' asked me to come and lay down some harmonica on a track he was working on.  I was reminded of 'tripping' by Robbie Williams for some reason and opted to pinch a fragment of a Brass Line from the end of the song and use it as a theme. Hows that for obscure?

Good versus Evil, Ecstasy & Betrayal and the universal human story, all in 90 minutes.

Howdy Folks.

I had an extraordinary evening last night at the AWE championship show. I’ve never considered myself a wrestling fan, being more a Dr Who kind of guy than a Stone Cold Steve Austin type but I admire those who follow their passions and I am stoked to have been a part of their night.

I have always had my reservations about the portrayal of violence, the surface level Machismo, the Alpha Male Dominance Rituals. I even blanched a bit at the presence of ‘The Ayatollah’, one of the AWE characters - My Political Correctness sense went into overdrive, thinking about the perceptions of negative group stereotyping and….well…too much hi brow thinking without enough High Brow Understanding.

Good Versus Evil. Ecstasy. Betrayal. The universal human story all in 90 minutes. Far Out.

Psykotic explained to me that Characters often emerge to represent elements of current affairs.

They are group avatars.

The bad guys personify negative behaviours, our collective fears.

The good guys fight for us, redeem us, protect us.

It’s the cosmic story, writ large, with barrels of chest thumping and a level of athleticism and acrobatics that is impressive.

It’s story telling in a very human, very open and childlike manner. No wonder the kids are crazy for it.

These men are Humans as Legend.

Heckling and chanting from the crowd was part of it, ranging from the screams of those young enough to take it seriously to the clever commentary from the Business Dudes who had still spent $20 to get in to drink and out-heckle each other with witticisms, but who couldn’t help but get caught up. Me too!

As Psykotic says, it’s all about the story, the drama.

It’s a Passion Play in tights.

I felt connected to some ancestor of mine who might have cheered outside a circle in a town square, watching gladiators, or bare knuckle fighters, or wrestlers on the steps of the Acropolis.

Ok maybe that’s a tad too much lyrical waxing (waxing is optional), but still, I was quite taken with the whole affair.

We played some music, it was fun, we got to participate in some of the story telling and I had an absolutely outstanding evening. The song we wrote for the championships, ‘Return of the King’ was well received and we’ll get around to recording it sooner or later. I have to send a big thank you to Bodhi’s Roadies (my mates Sam & Bodhi) for volunteering on sound.

Thank you also to Psykotic, Mr Exclusive, Birdman, Mr Money (BOOO!!), Vinnie Vain (BOOO!!!!) Bash (you wuz robbed!) and all to the guys from the AWE superstars for having us along.
